Both Pannonpower and its owner Dalkia Energia Zrt. is committed to tackling climate change, we are convinced that emission reduction can be realized through the use of renewable energy resources.
The annual fuel demand is around 240 thousand tons, and the straw fuel required will be purchased from the producers and integrators of the region. The fuel portfolio includes also energy cane, the main supplier of which will be a company specified in its production.
The fuel required for the operation of the boiler is ensured on the long run, since no more than about 3,5% of all the agricultural by-product generated in the region is required for safe operation, which quantity does not jeopardize the agricultural utilization. Even in years of poor yield the entire fuel demand can be satisfied within a radius of 100 km, i.e. from mainly the Counties of Tolna, Baranya, Somogy and Bács-Kiskun.
So far only a small portion of the straw to be used as fuel has been utilized by the farmers as litter, most of the rest has been ploughed back into the soil. Statistics show that the annual agricultural by-product generated in the region is approximately 7 million tons depending on the weather conditions, from which the power plant needs only 240 thousand tons. Even in the worst case this does not exceed 12% of the entire volume, therefore agro-production balance will not change, and the quantity remaining with the farmers will be more than enough to satisfy their needs.
Due to fire safety requirements it will be possible to accommodate a 3.5-day stock of the new fuel. It means that the bales will arrive to the power plant practically directly from the fields and will be used immediately. This is one of the reasons why the existing gas-fired boiler will be kept as a reserve, and in the event of extraordinary cold weather or supply difficulties it can immediately join energy production.
International experience shows that the high potassium and phosphorus level of the so-called bottom-ash generated in the combustion process makes it clearly fit for agricultural use: it can be used as soil improver or bio-nutritional product in agricultural lands.
